An Introduction to Brown’s World

Brown’s World is a geography program sponsored and coordinated by the PTO which was developed to increase student awareness and knowledge of countries around the world.
The program runs throughout the school year. Students will receive a study map at the beginning of each month and will be tested at the end of the month. The program is optional, and students study at home.
Here is some basic information regarding Brown’s World:
  • Each month focuses on a continent or basic theme (e.g., countries in Europe).
  • L.P. Brown teachers provided input about the countries and states included in order to prepare students for the curriculum.
  • The study of US states begins at level/grade 3.
  • Each month, students receive the following:
    • Study maps so students can practice.
    • Blank regional study maps are also provided each month for the students to color, practice with, etc.
    • Test dates for that month are provided on the study map. Typically, test dates are the last Wednesday of each month.  Retesting is offered for students absent on test day. This is usually done the following week and can be coordinated by contacting Collette Rauch at collette.rauch@live.com or 360-259-3581.
  • The Brown’s World outline provides you with the details of the entire program for the year and through all levels. There are five levels. Typically, a first grader studies level 1, a second grader studies levels 1 and 2. A third grader studies levels 1, 2, and 3, etc. Your child is welcome to study for a level other than their grade.  Simply notify your child’s teacher of a permanent level change or have your child notify the tester on test day.
  • Progress for each student is recorded monthly, and that information is provided to each teacher.  Feel free to contact the Brown’s World Coordinator, Collette Rauch, or your child’s teacher if you are interested in this report.
  • Individual recognition is provided at the end of the year to those students who passed Brown’s World tests. Based on their results, students may be eligible for a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal.
  • Maps are available for download on the LP Brown website.
Please contact Collette Rauch at collette.rauch@live.com or 360-259-3581 with any questions you may have or if you would be interested in volunteering for Brown’s World.

Testing dates for 2016-2017 school year are: 9/21, 10/19, 11/30, 1/25, 2/22, 3/22, 4/26, 5/31.
