August, 2021

Welcome to the 2021-2022 School Year!

Hello Families,

It is with great pleasure that I greet you as the new principal of LP Brown Elementary.  I am honored to lead this school and am humbled by this opportunity.  I know there will be questions as the year progresses and the impact of COVID continues.  I will do my best to share information and address questions promptly.

Visit the district “Back to School” webpage for links to the one-page 2021-22 school year calendar, school hours (note there are new start and end times this year), school supply lists, information about how to look up bus stops, route information, and more.
For the most current information about health and safety guidelines, including face coverings, physical distancing and more, please visit the  Frequently Asked Questions webpage on the OSD website.

I look forward to working with each of you. Please do not hesitate to contact me to share your questions, concerns or ideas.

Sincerely,
Principal Hauschka

COVID Update
Guidelines for reopening schools during the 2021-2022 school year were recently released by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State of Washington Department of Health.  The health of your children is very important to our staff and we will be sure to follow these guidelines closely.  Some key points to know are the following:

-All school personnel, volunteers, visitors, and students must wear cloth face coverings at school when indoors.
-Physical distance of three feet or more between students in classroom settings will be maintained to the degree possible and reasonable.
-Seating during mealtimes will be arranged so that students sit 6 feet apart to the degree  possible and reasonable.

Start Dates at LP Brown
The first day of school for students in grades 1-5 at LP Brown, is Wednesday, September 8, 2021. The school day begins at 8:00 AM and ends at 2:15 PM.  The campus opens to students beginning at 7:45 AM. Kindergarten begins on Monday, September 13, 2021.

Class Placement and Family Access Through Skyward
Class placements will be finalized and ready for viewing by Tuesday, August 31st.  You will be able to see your child’s new teacher by accessing Family Access through Skyward. You can access Skyward through the homepage of the LP Brown website.  When looking in Family Access, please make sure your contact information (including your email address) is current.

Supply Lists
Supply lists are available on the LP Brown website.  There is one supply list for each grade level. This allows you to gather supplies before class lists are published. If you need assistance accessing supplies please contact the school.

Back to School Night/Supply Drop Off
We hope to be able to hold a  September 7th Back to School/Supply Drop Off event.  If COVID guidelines make this a possibility, we will share logistics with you next week.

Free and Reduced Meals
The Olympia School District will continue to offer free meals to all children through the 2021-22 school year as part of an extension of a federal program by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Schools throughout the country can provide children with continued access to free meals through June 30, 2022, regardless of families’ ability to pay. The continuation of the program, which was first implemented at the beginning of the pandemic, is part of the federal government’s plan to reopen schools safely.

Families are still encouraged to complete an application for free or reduced lunches, as eligibility for free or reduced lunches could possibly lead to future benefits.

Early Release Days in September
Every Wednesday through the school year will be a 50-minute early release.  Students will be released on Wednesdays at 1:25 PM. During this 50-minute early release, teachers will be working together to align their instruction and design intervention/enrichment activities for students.  As this time is limited, please make sure to pick-up your students promptly at 1:25 PM on these days.  In September, every Wednesday (15th, 22nd and 29th) will be early release days.   The first day of school is not included.  September 8th is a full day with dismissal at 2:15 PM.

School Hours
Regular school hours are from 8:00 AM-2:15 PM. The gym and cafeteria will open in the morning at 7:45 AM.  Students should not be at school before 7:45 AM.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up
The turn-around in the front of the school is for quick drop-off and pick-up.  While in the turn-around, it is essential that you pull forward as far as possible and remain in your vehicle at all times.  If you need to come and pick your student up from the office or from a teacher, you should park in the main lot or on the streets surrounding the school and walk in for pick-up.  Please do not park in the turn-around.  These tips help pick-up and drop-off go smoothly. The buses pull into the lower parking lot for drop-off and pick-up.

After School Change in Plans
If you child is going home with a friend, or going to ride the bus to a friend’s house, the following information is needed:
Date
Child’s Name
Friend’s Name, and either address for the bus, or name of guardian picking up
Bus Route Number
Parent/Guardian Signature
This information can be sent in the morning on a note, or can be called into the office at 360-596-6800 no later than 1:30pm (12:40pm on Wednesdays).

Attendance Information
Attendance throughout the school year is critical for success in school.  In order to set your child up for success, it is important to arrive on-time and stay through the entire school day.

Attendance matters, but If your child is sick they should stay home.  Staying home when sick is essential to keep infections out of schools and prevent spread to others. Students and school employees who have symptoms of infectious illness, such as influenza (flu) or COVID-19, should stay home and seek medical evaluation.

To excuse an absence, please call our attendance line at 360-596-6803.

Lost and Found and Labeling of Clothing
Please label clothing with your child’s first and last name.  Coats, hats, gloves, etc. will be returned to your child if they are labeled.  Otherwise these items will be held in the lost and found for a short period of time and then will be donated to a local charity.  Please help us eliminate the need for a lost and found by labeling clothing at the beginning of the year.

Volunteer Application
We are appreciative of volunteers, but due to the COVID pandemic, volunteers are not being placed in Olympia School District schools at this time.  We are hopeful that we can resume having volunteers in buildings later this year.

Kindergarten Information for New Families
The first day of Kindergarten will be Monday, September 13th.  School will begin at 8:00 AM and will dismiss at 2:15 PM. All families should receive a letter from your new teacher at the end of August.  This letter will let you know who your teacher is for the year and when your family meeting is scheduled for.  The first three days of school (September 8th, 9th, and 10th) are used for family meetings.   Supply lists are available right now through our school website.

All school communications will be sent through email.  Please take time this summer to gain access to Skyward (Family Access) and update your personal information.  It is essential that you have an email address listed in Skyward.  This email address is used for all school communications.  Please contact the main office with any questions.

Alternatives to In-Person Learning
We are very excited to welcome children to the building and hope you choose to have your child attend LP Brown this year.  However, if in person learning is not the choice you feel is right for your family, our school district offers alternatives to in-person learning.  Information regarding these alternatives can be found below:

August PTO Notes:

Dear LP Brown Families~

A happy summer to you all and a BIG welcome to our new families, teachers, staff and Principal Hauschka!! While I am enjoying summer, it will be exciting to get to know the new members of our community this Fall!

For those of you who are new, or may not remember, the LP Brown PTO is our community organization that supports the success of our students! There are NO dues or fees and we encourage all family members and student caregivers to participate. There is no long-term commitment and you can help with one event or every activity. It’s really up to you and what works for your family.

Here are some notes for the month!

We are still waiting on Olympia School District guidance for our ability to have community events on campus- this includes regular meetings, a welcome back event, meet and greet for Principal Hauschka and our beloved Fall Fun Festival. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Our Vice President and Yearbook Coordinator positions are still OPEN. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out with one of these!

Our major fundraiser, the Golf Benefit is set for September 25, 2021 and we need your help! This was our only fundraising event last year and our school relies on it to help with classroom and school needs!!! Please consider playing, a sponsorship or volunteering to make this event a success! Two new ways to help this year include supporting an online auction or donating a “My Favorite Things” basket. Keep an eye out for more information or check out our website! https://4lpbptogolf.wordpress.com

Friendly reminder to please continue to support our school through everyday activities, such as “Box Tops for Education”,  “Amazon Smile” and the “State Charity Fund Drive”. You can find us listed as “Leland P. Brown Elementary PTO” in all of these platforms.

Wishing you all the very best and a happy end of summer!!
