Dear 4th and 5th grade families,

I am excited about Battle of the Books (BoB) at LP Brown.  This year Battle of the Books participation is optional rather than required.  The goals of this program are to encourage reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, and to promote academic excellence.  It can also be lots of fun!

Students work together on teams to read books from a list of pre-selected titles (see below). They can check out one BoB title at a time.  They discuss the books with their teammates, quiz each other on the contents, and then compete in teams to correctly answer questions (ie. “in which book was there a…?”) based on the books from the list.  Multiple copies of all titles are available in the library, but students can also borrow from Timberland Regional Library, or access TRL’s digital/audio books via the Olympia School District Portal.

Battle of the Books is a team effort. Each member of the 4-6 student team must do his or her part by reading/listening to the books he/she signed up for so that every title has been read by someone on the team.  The teams then compete in “battles” to see which team answers the most questions correctly.  The final championship battle will take place in mid-March, date and times to be determined. If a student wants to participate they must make a commitment to stick with their team until the finals in March.

Thank you for supporting your child in this exciting and fun reading program.

LP Brown has qualified for a federal grant enabling ALL of our students to receive free breakfast and lunch daily, regardless of the individual child’s family income.  In order to maintain this grant for the school year, we need to have all families fill out the income survey and submit it to LP Brown.
If you have not yet filled out the survey, please download  it, fill it out and return it to Mrs. Green in the office.  You can also email it directly to her at
