September, 2021

Hello Families,
It was wonderful to see many of you at our Back to School/Supply Drop Off event at the beginning of the month.  Thank you for wearing masks, following the social distancing guidelines, and attending at your scheduled time. Your adherence to these guidelines made holding the event possible.

Our first few weeks of school have been focused on community building activities, learning routines, practicing procedures and completing beginning of the year lessons in content areas. The start of the school year sets the tone for the rest of the year and is very important in forming a positive and collaborative learning environment.

We are committed to following COVID guidelines here at LP Brown.   If you have questions about health and safety guidelines, you are welcome to visit the Frequently Asked Questions webpage  and Covid Response Protocol on the OSD website.

Please do not hesitate to contact me to share your questions, concerns or ideas.

COVID Data Dashboard and Flowchart
If you would like to know more about the rate of cases of COVID in the Olympia School District, you can visit the Olympia School District,  COVID Data Dashboard.

Understanding the process for communicating about cases of COVID-19 is important, so that you and your family know what to expect in the event of COVID-19 symptoms, exposure, or a confirmed case at school.

A communication plan was developed collaboratively with Thurston County Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) to create consistency and prioritize student and staff safety. You can view the updated school communication plan and flowcharts for Thurston County schools during the 2021-22 school year by clicking here.

Family Liaison
LP Brown now has a full time Family Liaison.  His name is Jason Weza and he is an Evergreen State College graduate. Mr. Weza has been working with youth and their families in different capacities for the past decade. Currently, he is pursuing his master’s degree in counseling.

In his role as the Family Liaison, Mr. Weza’s goal is to ensure that all LPBES families feel welcome, understood, supported, and confident in the educational experience their child is receiving. Through his years with the Olympia School District, and other community-based organizations, he has worked with our most highly impacted students and their families. His focus has remained on creating a safe environment for all students and families to have a strong sense of belonging.

Mr. Weza hopes to connect with our families by:

-Forming meaningful and trusting relationships.
-Creating a safe space for parents to meet with school personnel.
-Encouraging parents to actively participate in educational conversations and decision making.
-Organizing family events that focus on culture and equity.
-Providing access to resources in the community, including housing and/or utility assistance, food, clothing, and mental health support.
Mr. Weza looks forward to creating meaningful partnerships between our families, community, and our schools throughout the school year and going forward.  Feel free to contact him if you have any questions: * (360) 596-6816

Dressing for the Weather
Please be sure that students  bring coats/rain gear with them to school.  The weather is changing and students need to be prepared for wet weather.

Over the next few weeks students will be taking the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment, in grades 1-5, and the Standards Based Assessment (SBAs), in grades 4 and 5.  These assessments provide information on where students are at in their learning.  This baseline data will be used to measure growth in the Spring, when students will be reassessed.
Americorps Members Wanted
LP Brown has been awarded 2 full time WSC positions for this year. These positions are 10.5 months long and members serve 40 hours per week. Do you know someone who wants to make a positive difference in their community? Would they be interested in applying for one of these positions?  If so, please have them read and complete the application information found here
Birthday/Holiday Foods
We know that birthdays and holidays are special times for students.  In the past, students have been able to bring in food to share with others. Please note that due to Covid guidelines, we are not able to accept or distribute birthday/holiday food to students.

Afternoon Parent Pick-Up
We have a large number of students being dropped off and picked up by parents/guardians at the end of the day.  This is an understandable choice, due to family schedules and COVID concerns.  However, it can make for long lines.  We have adjusted some of our  building level procedures to speed up this process.

We now have classes coming out a few minutes before 2:15pm, so that everyone will be present by 2:15pm for pick up.  We ask for your patience in waiting to pick up students until 2:15pm.  When parents come out of cars, or walk up early, to get students it gets confusing for teachers who are tracking the students.

If your student borrowed a textbook, whiteboard, or manipulatives last year and you still have these items at home, please send them back to school.  We are eager to put these materials to use in classrooms.

Early Release Days Reminder
Every Wednesday through the school year will be a 50-minute early release.  Students will be released on Wednesdays at 1:25 PM. During this 50-minute early release, teachers will be working together to align their instruction and design intervention/enrichment activities for students.  As this time is limited, please make sure to pick-up your students promptly at 1:25 PM on these days.

Alternatives to In-Person Learning
We enjoy working with all of our students and hope you continue to choose LP Brown as your child’s school.  However, if in-person learning is not the right choice for your family, our school district offers alternatives to in-person learning.  Information regarding these alternatives can be found below:
