PBIS

There are many acronyms in education. PBIS is one worth explaining, as it impacts the daily lives of students, staff and families. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. This system plays out in many ways at LP Brown.

The main concept of this program is that students are to be taught appropriate behavior very explicitly, and then recognized for demonstrating this behavior. This includes determining appropriate behavior in all areas of the school in the form of a matrix. Additionally, students are led on tours where these expectations are taught in the various locations. After all, how can we expect students to demonstrate appropriate behavior when we have not taught what we expect?

We have adopted the words of “Safe, Kind, Responsible” as overarching expectations. As you can see in the matrix, all behaviors fall within one of these categories. When you visit LP Brown, you will also see posters in common areas outlining the behavior we wish to see. Next time you are here, see how many posters you can spot! These words can also easily be transferred to students’ lives out of school as well. We imagine families expect their children to also be safe, kind and responsible at home. At school, students can earn Eagle Tickets for demonstrating the desired behavior.

Eagle Tickets

All staff members can give students Eagle Tickets to reinforce actions which are Safe, Kind and Responsible. A few things to understand about Eagle Tickets:

  • They are used to reinforce behavior we wish to see.
  • Giver will circle which word was demonstrated, and this instigates a conversation with the student. i.e. “I noticed you walked in the hallway. This shows that you are safe. Thank you for being safe here at Brown.”
  • They should be coveted – the incentives will cause students to seek this recognition.
  • They can be given by a teacher to his/her students.

When students collect varying amounts of Eagle Tickets, they will receive incentives. The count will reset each trimester. At various increments of 5, 10, 20 and 40 Eagle Tickets, students will receive a ticket from teacher. This ticket will be turned into office, student receives incentive item, and the ticket is sent home – allowing families to celebrate the accomplishment. The incentive items will change each trimester. Student names posted for each count benchmark. As you look at the board, try to find the name of your child! In addition, students receiving the minimum number of Eagle Tickets will take part in a trimester celebration at the end of each grading period.

Class Eagle Tickets

Students can earn Eagle Tickets as a class. All staff members can award a class Eagle Ticket, though teachers cannot reward their own class. Classes are recognized for displaying actions as a class that are Safe, Kind and Responsible. Class Eagle Tickets will be graphed in a public location (gym, lobby, etc.). The class with the most Class Eagle Tickets will take part in a special activity each trimester – the count resets with each new grading period.
